Noted
Islamic thinker and political science lecturer at the University of West Ulster
in the United States, Abdu Wahab Al Afandi described the recent military coup
attempt as an act of “military bias for the people ' ahead of time' ”. Alafandi
argued that the announced arrests of military personnel by security
authorities, as opposed to military intelligence which is the routine
procedure, reveals considerable overlap in security and military jurisdiction
and proves that the regime no longer trusts army units. The move can also be
interpreted as a message from the security apparatus to the army that they are
ready to face the army, should the need arise, reasoned Al Afandi.
In an
article he wrote, published by al-Quds al-Arabi website, the prominent lecturer
said that the announcement by the security services that there is a batch from
the security men received a high-level training of fighting arts, and linking
it to the ending of rebellion in Darfur would, undoubtedly, infuriates the
armed forces, because it is not the business of the intelligence director to
talk about ending the rebellion, or any other functions of the armed forces. Adding
that “and when that happens, it represents a challenge to the performance of
the armed forces” adding that there is another statement attributed to NISS
claiming that they will also deal with the fifth column within the army.
The writer,
who is considered as one of the first Islamic intellectuals who began
criticizing the ruling party, went further to claim that the move is can be a
green sign to the people to go into streets demanding the change of regime,
pointing out that the army will support them, because it had withdrawn its
support from the regime, and sided with the people, even before the street
moves.
The writer
concluded to the point that the people would then be sure that the army will
support them and may even go further to defend them if they targeted by the
security forces!
