The United Nations Independent Expert on the situation of
human rights in Sudan, Massoud Baderin, arrived today in Khartoum in an eight-day
visit to the country including Khartoum and Darfur.
According to a press statement it issued today, the United
Nations Information Centre (UNIC) in Khartoum, Baderin’s second visit to Sudan will
last to the 10th of current February.
“During my eight-day mission, I will focus primarily on
assessing and verifying the situation of human rights in the Sudan in order to
determine the technical assistance and capacity building needs of the Sudanese
Government,” said the rights expert.
Mr. Baderin, who visits the country at the invitation of the
Government, will travel also to Darfur, where he will meet with Government officials,
civil society actors, members of the diplomatic Corps and UN agencies, said the
Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR).
At the end of his visit, on Sunday February 10, the
Independent Expert will hold a press conference, at the offices of United
Nations Development Programme, and release statement with his main findings, as
well as his preliminary observations and recommendations. The UNIC added.
OHCHR said that Mr. Baderin will present his findings and
recommendations in a comprehensive report to the UN Human Rights Council in
September 2013.
