Jalila's relatives & friends celebrating her acquittal/ phot by Amal Habbani |
The Khartoum North Court has convicted the activist and teacher Jalila Khamis Kuku, who has been detained for about 10 months, of charge brought under article 66 on publishing false information, while dropped all other charges against her and was released on time she already served in prison.
Shawgi Ya’agoup, one of Jalila’s defence team told "Spotlight on Sudan" today that the court dropped all the other charges against Khamis
by the persecutor for lack of sufficient evidence and convicted her by the
article 66, under the Sudanese criminal law of 1991, on publishing false
information about the country, pointing out that she was released on time she
already served in prison.
“By this decision
Judge Nassir Salahaddeen lifted from the imprisoned activist the most serious
charges brought under the Sudanese criminal law of 1991, which were punishable
by death”. Ya’agoup added
The 45-year old activist and teacher was arrested in early
2012. She was working as a volunteer among internally displaced people from her
native South Kordofan.
She had appeared in mid-2011 in a Youtube video denouncing
conditions in the war-torn state. After her arrest, Jalila’s case drew the
attention of international advocacy group Amnesty International, which called
her a “prisoner of conscience.”
Last Wednesday, January 16, the Amnesty International called for immediate and unconditional release for Jalila.
"The remaining charges against Sudanese teacher and activist Jalila Khamis Koko must be dropped and she must be immediately and unconditionally released, Amnesty International said ahead of her court appearance".
Judge Nassir said in the hearing on Sunday that the
prosecution failed to provide credible evidence to the court, so the court
refuted charges of trying to provoke war against the country and undermining
the constitutional order, especially when the witness failed to confirm the
charges with clear evidence.
